March 17 Deadline for Wahine in Film Lab Applications!!!!!

Wāhine in Film Lab

Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking is now accepting applications for the 3rd annual Wāhine in Film Lab (May to October 2023) – an incubator for developing 10 short film ideas into viable projects by the end of their time at the Lab.

The 2023 Wāhine in Film Lab offers:

  • ​Seminars that provide valuable and practical conversations and information about the business of filmmaking, a built-in support network, and feedback sessions on your project.

  • Professional Mentorship is a one-to-one check-in time with an assigned mentor.

  • Presentations by leading filmmakers and industry figures.

  • Support services instrumental in making films offered by Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking, such as access to story consultants and cultural advisors, a notice board and directory of local women filmmakers to work with/hire, a pool of HWF filmmaking programs’ graduates eager to get hands-on experience as Production Assistants and in other roles, fundraising and grant resources and assistance in proposal writing, networking opportunities with other women media makers, and if needed, fiscal sponsorship for their film production.

  • Production Seed Funding up to $2,000.

The Wāhine in Film Lab runs from May to October 2023. Time commitment entails:

  • Participating at two online monthly seminars (one on the first and third Friday of the month, 5:00 to 6:30 pm, starting May 5, 2023). List of dates below in the fellowship timeline

  • Up to 2 hours of one-to-one time with an assigned mentor each month

  • Attending a monthly online panel presentation/webinar

  • Optional: in person Pau Hana/Meet-ups at the Hub Coworking Hawaiʻi

Eligibility

The project must be a short film – 30 minutes at maximum.

Wāhine in Film Lab participants will be:

  • Wāhine-identifying and non-binary filmmakers working on a short film or multimedia project idea

  • Any age and level of experience is welcomed, from beginner to expert,

  • IMPORTANT: Someone on the main creative team must reside in District 5 (part of Kaimukī, Pālolo Valley, St. Louis Heights, Mānoa, Mōʻiliʻili, McCully and portions of Ala Moana, Kakaʻako, and Makiki). Not sure if you do? Check this website.

  • Applicants must own the copyright of their production and have artistic, budgetary, and editorial control over their project.

  • If you have participated in a previous Lab, you can re-apply, but your submission needs to be with a new project.
